Regardless of whether you're contemplating a "kitchen makeover" or "major surgery," most of us still have a budget to consider. Reflect on the list of common kitchen remodeling objectives below, in addition to any other reasons you may have. Think about what's ultimately most important to you. When push comes to shove, a priority list can make the decision-making process easier.

What are your major objectives
* Increasing your floor or cabinet space
* Creating a sleek, new contemporary look
* Upgrading fixtures, cabinets, countertops and appliances
* Introducing new technologies to help your kitchen serve as the family's hub
* Creating a floor plan that better suits your lifestyle
* Increasing your home's value

Again, bearing your budget and priority list in mind, set about deciding which aspects of your kitchen remodeling project warrant "the works" and which simply require a "makeover." For example, if you have plenty of cabinet space but feel your cabinets look outdated, changing the cabinet faces can add a whole new look at a fraction of the cost of replacing them. The same can be true of replacing your countertops on top of your existing kitchen cabinets vs. the cost of changing them both. Of course, you already know that you can change the entire color scheme of your kitchen with a new paint color, an area rug and a few new accents. By considering these types of cost-saving alternatives, it may be easier to stretch your budget to incorporate all of the elements you really want. Alternatively, you may decide that "the works" is really what you want but at least by considering the alternatives, you'll be making a well-informed decision.

Once you've decided what you're going to include in your kitchen remodeling project, that's when the real fun begins. Brainstorming, daydreaming, getting creative or whatever you call it — this is the phase in which you fill in the details of what your dream kitchen will include. Scope out magazines, clip pictures, browse stores, showrooms and model homes. Go on the Web or do whatever you need to do to get your creative juices flowing to help you visualize creating your new kitchen your way.

By creating a visual image of the kinds of styling, decor and elements that would make your dream kitchen, you'll greatly enhance your chances of creating exactly that. Don't be bound by tradition, but instead visualize a kitchen that's suited to your tastes and individual preferences. Bring vibrant colors, pictures and plants, or whatever it is that expresses your personality, into the scheme in order to create an atmosphere that you'll love.

Don't forget to factor in your lifestyle. Are you always on the go Then, a breakfast bar may be in order to provide the perfect place for quick, easy meals. Do you cherish your morning coffee How about an espresso or cappuccino maker Is the kitchen your place for everything from family meetings to figuring out the bills If so, perhaps a computer station is in order. Alternatively, maybe you're a master cook who spends a great deal of time creating culinary masterpieces and who, accordingly, deserves not only the best of cookware and appliances but also an atmosphere befitting that of an artist's studio. Would a new range or refrigerator, along with just the right music, lighting and atmosphere, help to inspire your creations
